MBST Treatments For Sports Injuries

With any sports injury the quicker it heals the quicker you can get back to playing your sport. For sports men and women who compete professionally it is not just an inconvenience not being able to play your chosen sport, it can be career limiting. MBST (Magnetic Resonance Therapy) combined with physiotherapy speeds up the rehabilitation process.

So what is MBST and how does it work?

mbst treatment bedMagnetic resonance therapy is based on MRI technology and so it is completely safe. It has been used to treat over 500,000 people worldwide with no side effects. Ann Clare has been using MBST since July 2007 alongside traditional physiotherapy and has had remarkable success in treating a number of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries.

An MBST machine looks much like a less intimidating MRI scanner. Depending on the area to be treated you lie down or sit (fully clothed) and the area is treated with the resonating magnetic field. A typical session lasts an hour and 3, 5 or 9 consecutive daily treatments are applied depending on the severity of the condition.

The effect of the treatment is speed up and aid in the repair of the damaged tissue. There are different programme settings depending on the type of tissue being targeted and the part of the body to be treated. In the case of sporting injuries it results in faster healing and repair times and can often fix stubborn and persistent injury sites.

MBST is able to treat different types of tissue and has specific settings suited to treating that particular part of the body. Typically treatments are applies to bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.

Treating Bone with MBST

MBST therapy has long been used in the treatment of osteoporosis to increase bone density. For sports injuries it can be used to speed up the healing of broken bones and strengthen the bone after bone mass loss. It is safe to use in areas where there are metal pins and rods.

MBST treatment for Tendons

The physiological effect is to clear the inflammation which is causing the pain and repairs the fibrous tissue which is also causing pain. In the case of tendons MBST works by increasing the circulation to the injured site and this speeds up the healing process.

Ligament treatment with MBST

Ligaments of the knee, shoulder and elsewhere can be treated. Ligaments are the structures that join one bone to another. They are made up mostly of collagen and a small percentage of fibroblast cells. Ligament injury's such as a twisted ankle, twisted knee or ligament sprain can be repaired using this treatment.

MBST treatment encourages increased blood flow to the damaged area which encourage an increase in fibroblasts over the injured area that then go on to make type 3 collagen tissue. This new tissue will over time mature to type 3 collagen, it is important to have the right physiotherapy exercises at this point to remodel the collagen to rebuild and strengthen the area.

Cartilage repair with MBST

MBST can be used to regrow cartilage tissue in the joints. It have been used for many years to successfully treat common arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis which affect 8 million people in the UK. Common types of injury include torn cartilage in the knee (meniscus tear) and tears to the articular cartilage within a joint.

Cartilage acts like a buffer or cushion between the joints and sporting activities that place more strain on the joints can lead to injury. Common injuries include torn cartilage in the knee.

Common areas treatable with MBST

  • Lower limb
  • Upper limb
  • Elbow
  • Shoulder
  • Ankle
  • Foot
  • Calf
  • Hamstrings
  • Groin
  • Rotator cuff
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Knee injuries
  • Torn ligaments
  • Torn tendons
  • Pulled tendons
  • Strained ligaments
  • Back injury

If you are seeing an orthopaedic consultant then you may have a condition that is treatable with MBST. Patients are often referred to Clare House for treatment by orthopaedic consultants.

MBST is also a useful treatment post surgery to speed up healing and recovery process.

How long does MBST take to treat for sports injuries?

Usually a course of treatments consist of consecutive daily 1 hour sessions, depending on the severity of the injury this will usually either be a total of 3 or 5 hours. This will be done alongside physiotherapy as you will need specific exercises for a full and effective recovery.

The application of MBST will repair and regenerate the affected area for 10 weeks. During this time in some cases you may experience some pain or discomfort as the area heals.

The benefit of having MBST alongside physiotherapy is that you will experience faster healing times. There will be less stiffness and pain during the first few weeks allowing specific exercises to strengthen the damaged area. MBST helps general well being.

How MBST works so well for sports injuries

With the application of MBST sports injuries heal faster. Light exercises and training for up to a 10 week period is the foundation of the safe return to sport. Some sportsmen and women are able to return to sport almost straight away because of physiotherapy with MBST.

The effectiveness of MBST is backed up by years of published research that shows the improvement that can be made in speeding up the bodies natural repair processes. Whether you play sport in a professional or amatuer capacity you will want to be able to return to your position of play as earlier as possible knowing that the injury will be fully recovered.

A typical treatment for a sports injury would usually start with an initial assessment to decide the most suitable treatment for the injury. You will be advised on the management of the injury, it is not necessary that every injury requires MBST, you may be prescribed a different treatment and specific exercises instead.

If MBST is prescribed your next visit may include the first MBST treatment which will be followed by a daily 1 hour treatment, usually for 3 or 5 consecutive days. You will be instructed in what happens after the MBST. Professional sportsmen and women will have their own physiotherapist so they can return to after the course of MBST. Ann Clare will be able to work with your own club physiotherapist.
