Neck pain

There are numerous symptoms of neck and low back problems. Every single person is different because of lifestyle, posture and the underlying affect of pain.

Eight levels of the neck along the vertebral column from C1 down to C8 can be affected by overuse, sport, age, postural positions and so on. The onset of neck pain is caused by something specific. Overall disc problems in the neck can settle quicker than in the lumbar region.


cervical spineThrough the ageing population patients find diagnosed of having osteoarthritis of the neck. Osteoporosis can occur but also a lot of other conditions associated with age. Discs can narrow, facet joints can get irritable, in the neck area nerves can be encroached. Osteophytes and other degenerative changes can be associated with levels of pain but don’t have to be related to the pain.

In young, wry neck which is stiffness with the neck leaning to one side. In teenagers neck pain from sport, in the working population neck pain from posture due to sitting in the same position for long periods. Strains can occur from lifting either at home and at work. Neck pain with shoulder pain and arm pain are common disorders relating to the cervical spine.

Apart from physiotherapy, MRI scans, CT and X-Rays can be taken. They are not usually very helpful but they rule out more serious sources of pain, neck pain and headaches. Six out of ten people will have neck pain at some point in their life, many seeking medical help. One percent of these cases will have serious pathology.
